The kind of consumers of Shanzhai shirts that are collected by Shanzhai Lyric include young female assembly workers like Tian Yu, who takes a prominent position in my PhD research. “Xiao Tian Xiao Tian” is a response to Shanzhai Lyric's archive at Women's Art Libray. It is an image manipulated from a pair of supposedly Jeremy Scott shirts, and makes visible the practice of gossiping between female factory workers as a minor genre of resistance. The minor genre is taken from Deleuze and Guattari’s minor literature which is constructed by a minority within a major language and that is political. The image features a hand-written text translated by Google from English to French to cover the original French text on the shirt, that even a Shanzhai shirt couldn't escape the rigorous fashion hierarchy with haute couture atop it all. The written text on gossip - sourced from Women’s Art Library - is from Irit Rogoff’s asking on the death of Ana Mendieta, who was allegedly murdered by Carl Andre.
